Self Motivation

Staying Motivated in Your Work-From-Home Job

While there are many obvious advantages to working from home, there are also plenty of downsides, some of which don’t become apparent until after you’ve been doing it for a while. In particular, motivation can be a serious problem. Most people who work from home eventually reach a point where they just can’t seem to stay motivated. It may come after a few months, or it may take a few years, but almost everyone who works from home eventually experiences it.

Lack of motivation can seriously interfere with your productivity. For seemingly no reason, work that used to be exciting begins to feel like a drag. You find that the number of tasks you can complete in a day becomes smaller and smaller. You get easily distracted. Your mind wanders. You may even reach a point where you go through large chunks of your day without accomplishing a single thing. What happened to your old motivation?
The problem is that, after a while, we get too set in our ways, and we forget the reasons why we started working from home in the first place. The benefits seem less attractive, and the goals become more remote.

If you want to reverse this trend, here are some things you can do.

Chop up your goals

While having long-term goals is always a good thing, sometimes they’re not quite enough to keep us going on a minute-to-minute basis. That’s where short-term goals come in. Set daily, weekly, and monthly goals, and when you reach these goals, reward yourself.

For example, rather than just working until the day is done, make a list of tasks you want to complete on a given day. Then, once you have done all those things, set yourself free to do what you want with the rest of your day. It’s a great help to know that the more you stay focused, the more free time you’ll have in the evening.

Don’t forget your long-term goals

Short-term goals are great for getting motivated, but you also have to have a broader trajectory behind what you do. Make several long-term goals across different categories. For example, maybe one of your goals is to make a certain salary this year, and maybe you also want to move to a nicer neighborhood or take a luxurious vacation. All of these goals are realistic, so there’s no reason why you can’t work toward all of them at once.

Keep it interesting

It may be that your shortage of motivation comes from a lack of interest in the work you’re doing. It’s important for your business to keep evolving, even if only in small ways. If you find that your work is not stimulating, or if it’s not fulfilling to you personally, think about how you can recalibrate your approach to make things more to your liking.

Seek outside assistance

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to keep yourself motivated, it’s just not possible to do it on your own. Fortunately, there are many high-quality motivational programs that have helped millions of people worldwide obtain the mental and practical tools needed to stay motivated and to have success. So, rather than getting discouraged, try listening to what others have to say about how to stay motivated.
