Ever Wish You Could Be Your Own Boss?

Practically everyone wants to be able to work from home. The idea of settings one’s own hours, having no commute and no bosses, and being able to earn simply by performing simple tasks at one’s computer sounds pretty good, and not many people would pass that up. But while there are certainly lots of legitimate online data entry jobs out there, there are a few things people might want to know before diving into this field of employment. Let’s take a realistic look at whether paid typing and data entry jobs are really all they’re cracked up to be.

More than just typing

First things first, no data entry job involves merely typing and nothing else. There’s always more to it than that. For example, if the job involves transcribing audio content into text, you have to be able to accurately hear what multiple voices are saying and to transcribe their words and sentences in a grammatically correct way. This sounds easy enough, but many people find it much harder than they thought. Even the best transcribers take around five minutes to transcribe each minute of recorded audio. So, obviously, transcribing is much more than just typing.

This goes for other jobs that are commonly classified as data entry work. Even pure data entry—taking raw data and entering it into a database—involves some thought and skill. And let’s not forget that jobs like these can be quite fatiguing over a whole day. Such repetitive work can begin to wear on the nerves, and one ends up needing to take frequent breaks.

So while much data entry work does indeed involve typing, it’s not as simple as it sounds. And if you are serious about making money in data entry, you need to be prepared to take your work very seriously. If you go into it thinking that it’s going to be easy and that you can just coast through it, you’re not going to go very far. Your employers are going to expect quality work from you, and if you can’t provide it they will go to someone else.

Finding success

Beyond the fact that data entry jobs typically involve more than just typing, it’s also important to remember that many people who attempt to enter this field don’t get very far. There are a few reasons for this. First, online data entry is highly competitive, and when you start trying to find work you will be up against people who have been doing this for years. That’s why many people who are just starting out have to ask for prices that are much lower than what’s ideal. Some data-entry professionals must work years before they begin to earn reasonable rates.

Plus, finding success in data entry requires a long-term commitment to working hard day in and day out. Yes, it is great to be able to work from home using your own computer, but there are some downsides to counter the upsides. For one thing, working from home can actually become a little stifling after a while. Eventually you will begin to realize that there’s actually something nice about being out in the world and having coworkers—even if in general you would rather be at home.

Finally, even though data entry work can be quite rewarding, many people who enter this field have difficulty staying motivated in the long term. The work can be quite repetitive, and some people get bored after a few months. The key is to move beyond this feeling and find ways to keep yourself going. Setting earnings goals can be helpful, as can taking occasional vacations.
