Google AdSense: Simple, Customizable Ads for Big Revenue

Over the last few years, we’ve come to rely on the folks at Google to consistently deliver high-quality and innovative solutions to our web-based needs. In addition so their search technology, they’ve given us Gmail, Google Earth, Google Image Search, and Picasa, not to mention their web browser and desktop apps. Now, Google has AdSense, a service specially designed for people with web-based businesses to market their goods and services in a highly targeted way.

Since its initial release in 2005, AdSense has consistently improved and added new features, so that it’s now one of the top services for online advertising. While many other services tend to deliver clunky, invasive, and not very well-targeted ads, Google uses a high-tech system that targets ads directly to the types of readers who would be looking at your site and reading your content. In other words, the ads are not just targeted, but also useful to your readers.

But there are other things that make Google’s AdSense stand out:

Minimal work: All you have to do is sign up, and then most of the work is performed by AdSense. You don’t have to go after all of your particular advertisers yourself. Google analyzes your site, takes your categories and keywords into account, and automatically places ads that are applicable. After signing up, there’s not much maintenance required of you.

Maximum revenue: AdSense has implemented a complex strategy of making advertisers compete with each other. In short, companies bid auction-style for who will pay the most for Cost-Per-Click or Cost-Per-Thousand-Impression ads. This small-business-friendly strategy will work to increase your revenues, and, once again, there is very little that you will have to do yourself.

Ads change with content: Many other ad services aren’t very dynamic. While your site changes, the ads stay the same, and you have to either arrange a new deal with them or make the change yourself. On the other hand, AdSense automatically changes its ads to stay in line with your content. So you simply never have to worry about it. You can do anything you want with your site, and AdSense will do the adjustment work for you.

Customizability: AdSense lets you determine which types of ads you do not want, and it lets you block ads that are against your interests. Plus, it allows you to customize the style and appearance of the ads, so that you can make them blend in organically with your site design.

Sure, there are still downsides to Google AdSense. For one thing, in many of their forms, the advertisements say “Ads by Google” at the top, which makes it clear that it’s just an ad. This instantly turns many people away. But on the other hand, many people trust Google, and they are much more likely to click on Google ads than than on ugly banners or flyouts created by other companies.

However, if you’re just starting out and are looking for ways to begin advertising, AdSense is a good way to start. But keep an open mind, and maybe there will be a good time to branch out later on.
